MOTORISTS are being warned they could face a number of delays as a busy crossing in the town centre is upgraded.

The crossing at the junction of Worcester Road and Hanover Street is set to be upgraded to a Puffin crossing – a crossing that allows pedestrians and traffic to be managed more efficiently, using detectors that respond to demand.

The two existing Zebra crossings on the exit from Worcester Road will be retained.

However, a number of closures will need to be put into place.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for economy and infrastructure, said a lot of work has already taken place across Bromsgrove to improve walking and cycling routes and there is “much more” planned in 2020.

“This crossing is well used by people wanting to access the town centre and it’s important that we ensure pedestrians are able to cross this busy road as safely as possible,” he said.

Work will start on January 27 for around five weeks.

During this period, it will be necessary to close sections of footway.

While the existing controlled crossing is inaccessible, alternative controlled crossing points will be available.

The left turn out of Worcester Road will be closed for the majority of the time that the works take place and a diversion will be in place.

Also, for a short period of time the junction will be controlled with temporary traffic lights.

In addition, from mid-March, there will be up to five night-time road closures of Worcester Road/Hanover Street for carriageway resurfacing.

Vehicular access out of Worcester Road will remain open, but the route out of the road will depend where the work is taking place, this will be clearly signposted.

Dates/times may vary due to factors such as poor weather, so people are being urged to keep an eye on worcestershire.gov.uk/info/20694/bromsgrove_improvements
